Birth Parents
If you are a birth parent whose child was adopted in the past, Family Care Adoption Services can offer you a supportive service.
While Birth families do not have the legal right to information about a birth child placed for adoption under current legislation in Northern Ireland, Family Care will assist you as far as is possible.
We will provide help in identifying the Agency that holds your birth child’s adoption file:
- If this is a local Health and Social Care Trust we will help you to make contact with the right Social Work Team to assist you.
- If Family Care holds this information, we can provide you with services from support, to providing non identifying background information, arranging to have letters placed on file, through to undertaking a search for your birth family and facilitating contact and reunion where possible.
We have Social Workers who specialise in providing services to Adopted Adults and Birth Family members, and would be happy to hear from you.
Other Birth Relatives
If you are the Birth Relative of an Adopted Adult, Family Care Adoption Services can offer you a supportive service.
While Birth families do not have the legal right to information about a birth child placed for adoption under current legislation in Northern Ireland, Family Care will assist you as far as is possible.
- If we are not the Agency who holds the information about the adoption of your Birth Relative, we will help to identify the right Social Work Team to assist you.
- If Family Care is the Adoption Agency that holds this information, we can provide you with a range of services, depending on the particular situation: This includes support and undertaking a search for your birth relative and facilitating contact where possible.
We have Social Workers who specialise in providing services to Adopted Adults and Birth Family members, and would be happy to hear from you.
Next Step Birth Family Support and Counselling Service
‘Next Step’ is a counselling and support service jointly provided by Family Care Adoption Services and our partner agency Adoption Routes.
Next Step is available to those whose child or children have been placed for adoption in the recent past including Birth Parents, Siblings, Grandparents and other Birth Family members who have had a significant relationship with the child. Previous Foster Carers can also avail of the Next Step service.
Referral to Next Step is usually via your Trust Social Worker, but self referrals are also accepted. Further information can be found at http://www.nextstepni.org/ or email: info@nextstep.org
